Jehovah was not in the wind. And after the wind, an earthquake: Jehovah was not in the earthquake.
And after the earthquake, a fire: Jehovah was not in the fire. And after the fire, a soft gentle voice. (1Kings 19:11-12)

31 Days ~ Write to Discover One’s Self {Day 3}

31 Days

I guess I thought by my mid 30's I would have it all figured out.

When I look back on my life I see that some of the things I still struggle with were things I struggled with 20 years ago. Not only that, but as I learn about things that I went through over 30 years ago I wonder how they have contributed to who I am today.

Wouldn't  it be worth it to look deeper and have a greater understanding?

“I am convinced that writing creatively is a beautiful and rewarding experience for discovering one’s self. For writing is one of the most forceful ways of learning, perceiving, maturing, expanding. The writer can never remain the same, for each time he takes pen in hand, he enters mentally and emotionally into the area of transforming indefinable feelings into articulated definable reality. When he captures in words his inner world, he is able to add a dimension to his discernment of self.”
~Ruth Vaughn, Write to Discover Yourself

I know I have so much to learn about who I really am.

In this process I need to seek the One who knows my heart, my thoughts. By recounting the wonderful things the Lord has done sets up the foundation of gratitude. What He has done is really past my understanding. I can only give thanks.

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God!
How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways!        . . . For from him and through him and to him are all things.
To Him be glory forever.
~Rom 11:33

31 Days ~ The Writer {Day Two}

How can it hurt?

To scratch out some words?

To dig into my thoughts and pull them out to see how they take shape?

To pretend to be a writer?

All day long, thoughts flutter around and when I don't jot them down they are gone forever.

I am encouraged to pick up the pen again, to let my fingers dance along the keyboard, for really there is so much to discover I don't want to miss out!

"THE WRITER is the person willing to open all the doors of his heart, to fling wide the windows of perception, to welcome all the richness into personal experience!

THE WRITER is the person who grabs the fleeting ideas, pulls them from midair, and takes the time to analyze them until they transform into tangible reality: words written on paper to be read and reread; to be studied and restudied; to be internalized and experienced in fullest measure.

. . . the writer structures for his person the record of total blending of mind and heart"

31 Days ~ to write to discover who I am and why {Day One}

31 Days
My fingers falter a little as I begin. I have wondered how crazy I am to think of even trying this.

To write 31 days.

I have written in journals and messed around with words a little. But, to call myself a writer? That might be a stretch! Yet, I write. I need to wrestle with these words to find my way.

Fears and perfection keep me from lifting pen, tapping fingers.

So I take this challenge to abandon some of those. To write for 31 days to discover who I am and why?

I stumbled over this book, Write to discover yourself, by Ruth Vaughn, on the internet years ago, but I finally just got a copy from ebay recently. As soon as it came in the mail I was eager to open it up.

I was keen to read more about writing; to learn how it’s done.

I keep being prompted to write out the mighty deeds the Lord has done in my life, my story. Oh, it is so much safer to stay in obscurity. But to remember the wondrous works of the Lord and to tell them is to offer up these words as praise and thanksgiving to the Lord, my God.

So, here I am. Putting these two challenges together: to write for 31 days about writing to discover myself.

I will write here about what I am learning about writing and hopefully be courageous enough to practice writing to discover more about myself. I have no idea how this journey may unfold. I wander into this strange land with promised blessing with many others who have discovered this craft of writing already. But, I will write to an audience of One and if it is that others may be blessed than to God be the glory.

Oh give thanks to the LORD;
call upon his name; make known his deeds among the peoples!
Sing to him, sing praises to him; tell of all his wondrous works!
Glory in his holy name; let the hearts of those who seek the LORD rejoice!
Seek the LORD and his strength; seek his presence continually!
Remember the wondrous works that he has done . . .
(Psalm 105:1-5)

When a call comes from the Cardiologist

He called me on a Tuesday afternoon to tell me that he wants me to have another TEE.

I was getting ready to go on a hike on the Niagara Escarpment. When I hung up the phone I cried out to the Lord.

Then I wondered if I should go on that hike.

As soon as I had picked up the phone and the secretary asked if I could hold on because the Cardiologist would like to talk to me I knew it couldn't possibly be good news.

I had just been to see him the week before - in a cardiac clinic in Toronto. He wasn't really sure what to do with me. He didn't really like the missing information on the written reports of the tests I have already had. There was no way he would proceed with anything based on those reports. From what he could see he wasn't so sure it was even as bad as the report indicated. He wanted to see the actual imaging of my heart on the latest test done. I told him I would do my best to get it from the hospital.

A few days later the images were burned onto a CD and sent to Toronto.

He watched the images and had other doctors view them as well and he called to tell me what he saw.

Getting straight to the point he shared with me that what he saw on the images did not match what was on the written report he had received. He told me he saw a number of problems. From what he could see, not only was my aortic valve not normal, neither was my mitral valve and I had a subaortic membrane. What complicates it is my petite size and the fact that I only have one functioning lung. He referred me to a Respirologist as well.

The week before, in his office, he felt that surgery was too risky at this point to fix anything. And even if they did do surgery he was not sure that it would be of any real benefit at this point. And it would guarantee more surgery in the future ~ once they replace a valve it will only last for so long.

He tells me on a Tuesday afternoon that I don't fit the standard and that we need to stay on top of all this.

It leaves me, once again, with more questions than answers.

Waiting.

Fighting fears.

In the waiting I read of King Asa, a king of Judah, who "did what was good and right in the eyes of the Lord his God". He took away foreign alters and commanded Judah to seek the Lord. The Lord granted him peace and rest. He prospered and the Lord fought on his behalf.

God promised him, "The LORD is with you while you are with him. If you seek him, he will be found by you, but if you forsake him, he will forsake you."

He gathered his people together "And they entered into a covenant to seek the LORD, the God of their fathers, with all their heart and with all their soul,

(2Ch 15:12)

He even had his own mother removed from being queen because she had made a detestable image.

Yet, near the end of his reign he turned to the King of Syria when he was threatened. Because of his foolishness of not relying on the Lord, the rest he had known was ended.

Then, we read that in his thirty-ninth year of his reign,

"Asa was diseased in his feet, and his disease became severe. Yet even in his disease he did not seek the Lord, but sought help from physicians."

The word seek here refers specifically to worship.  But he turned to men who mend, not to Jehovah ~ the Lord who heals.

He died two years later.

Asa was remembered as a good king, but in moments of difficulties he turned to man and not the One who promised to bring rest and peace. He had entered a covenant to seek the LORD and whoever did not seek Him would be put to death.

Seeking the help of the physicians was not his problem it was that He did not seek the Lord.

To put anything before the Lord is idolatry.

Who do we turn to when difficult circumstances come into our lives?

May it be that we would seek:

Jehovah Jireh ~ the Lord our Provider

Jehovah Shalom ~ the Lord our Peace

Jehovah Rapha ~ the Lord our Healer

Rapha means to heal, to mend, make healthful, to make whole.

Jesus Christ came that I would be made whole. He came to heal me not only of my physical infirmities, but more importantly to make me alive in Him.

I will seek the Lord ~ to worship Him ~ even in these uncertainties and I will be blessed with knowing His presence.

Free from fretfulness . . . in the midst of afflictions

O Lord, my God . . . give me grace, I beseech Thee, to understand the meaning of such afflictions and disappointments as I myself am called upon to endure. Deliver me from all fretfulness. Let me be wise to draw from every dispensation of Thy providence the lesson Thou art mindful to teach me.
Give me a stout heart to bear my own burdens. Give me a willing heart to bear the burdens of others. Give me a believing heart to cast all burdens upon Thee.
Glory be to Thee, O Father, and to Thee, O Christ, and to Thee, O Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. Amen.

~ John Baillie, twenty-seven day from A Diary of Private Prayer

Cast your burden on the Lord
and he will sustain you;
he will never permit the righteous to be moved.

How to relax when starting on an IV

With a Russian accent, my nurse tells me to relax, to not be so tense. She is prepping me for an IV for a procedure I need. I had had to fast from liquids as well as solids so my body is dehydrated and my veins are not going to be an easy target. She gathers some warm blankets and wraps my arms up in them to get the blood flowing better.

I was in the hospital for a TEE, a procedure I had 10 years ago and it was not a pleasant experience at all. When this procedure is performed you are to be sedated enough you are not really aware of what is going on, but I was obviously not sedated enough and yanked the probe out of my throat and had a horrible memory of it.

I try to not be tense, but it clearly isn't working. My Russian nurse keeps talking to me; trying to distract me. I am not distracted. It is not that I am terrified of hospitals or pain, I just know what it is like to be poked multiple times.

I suggest she use a small needle as that is generally more successful for my veins, but she decides not to. She attempts to hit one of my better veins, but it collapses. She waits for a little while to see if she can dig for it. She pulls out.

She massages my arm, coaxing the veins to co-operate. Sympathetically, she asks me not to make her cry. I tell her 'I won't make you cry if you don't make me cry'. She tries again. This vein rolls; she missed. She pokes around. She waits and waits to see if she can get it. No. She pulls out again, feeling horrible and tells me she will go get her co-worker, an IV nurse.

We wait until the IV nurse comes in full of confidence. I ask her to use the smaller needle and she says, "Of course, that is what I usually do."

Good. I continue to pray. "Lord, please help her get it. I really shouldn't be this pathetic. Look what you endured for me, I should be able to handle some needles."

My husband is sitting in the corner, not really sure what he can do, watching helplessly. I look to him for reassurance.

The IV nurse gets ready, has her small needle and hits a valve! I wince in pain. Then she pulls out and it is as the needle comes out that I nearly hit the roof and yell. My first nurse comes rushing in to see what is going on and I can only feebly apologize. I assure them I can handle pain; I have gone through childbirth three times without any pain medication. I laugh at myself. My husband laughs with me at my dramatic outburst. I still  feel I have to explain my outcry ~ it really did hurt.

I talk to myself ~ I must relax. I close my eyes. Breathe!

I am so tense now, I could cry!

I pray, finally, Lord please, wrap your arms around me. I need your presence; your peace.

The forth needle goes right in, no collapsing, no valves, and no pain.

The day before I had been praying and beseeching others to pray with me these prayers:

"Almighty God, who of Thine infinite wisdom hast ordained that I should live my life within these narrow bounds of time and circumstances, let me now go forth into the world with a brave and trustful heart. It has pleased Thee to withhold from me a perfect knowledge; therefore deny me not the grace of faith by which I may lay hold of things unseen. Thou has given me little power to mould things to my own desire; therefore use Thine own omnipotence to bring Thy desires to pass within me. Thou hast willed it that through labour and pain I should walk the upward way; be Thou then my fellow traveler as I go." (Diary of Private Prayer)

And then I went in and was sure I could handle this procedure on my own.

Why do I ask that He be my fellow traveler and then march on as though I have to go down this road on my own?

I need to surrender all to His loving care and rest in His peace.

The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God,which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
